Dun Aengus is a well-known pre-historic fort located on Inishmore Island, the largest of the Aran Islands,

in County Galway.  The views from

the fort are amazing.

It is located on the top of a cliff of several hundred feet.  There is no definitive answer about exactly when it was built or who built it.  Three concentric semi-circles compose this stone fort.  It was restored in the late nineteenth century.

The fort consists of  concentric walls of dry stone construction.  Part of the fort and the wall has collapsed into the sea.  The outer-most wall encloses an area of approximately 14 acres.  It is believed that the fort was used for religious and ceremonial

activities.
